[T]ekel is Parisian duo Julien Briffaz and Loic Le Guillou. My french is a bit rusty, but I believe that “tekel” must translate to wiener dogs because from a google image search I got multiple images like the following:
At any rate, [T]ekel been churning out some of the absolute best techno these past years. Their tracks have appeared on such releases as ex Black Strobe member Ivan Smagghe’s Fabric mix and a few of good ol’ electro champion Erol Alkan’s mixes as well. The dancefloor killer on this release is “Bezu Christ”. Check out the casio backbeat around 2:08. “(Envie De) Sauce Madere Avec Toi ” is more emotional and deep.
P.S. If someone could help me out with what “tekel” really means I would greatly appreciate that.
This one is a remix of did of a classic. It’s time for the percolator… It’s time for the percolator.
Cajmere, if you did not know, is also Green Velvet. This song most recently, off the top of my head, was on the Diplo Fabric cd and was sampled in the “Wu Tang Slide” by Bamabounce. I think I might do another re-edit of this song next week, so keep those eyes peeled!
Banger du Jour nothin’ – this is definitely Le Banger de la Month, and maybe even de la Year So Far. It’s on the upcoming Kitsune 4 and if you haven’t heard it yet you will be unable to avoid it as soon as it drops. I first heard this Australian band/production team (and yes, it’s yet another damn amazing group of electro-awesome Aussies with close ties to the Modular mafia) when I heard this Daft Punk meets synthpop ditty on the fantastic Fabric29 (Cut Copy) last summer:
One more for good measure: the track “45 and Rising” is available on vinyl here and features a Cut Copy remix. Listen here and then go buy the real deal.
(BTW I posted the original version of the Dragonette song last week. I think it’s pretty fantastic as well, but definitely more pop/radio than danceypants. Here it is again in case you blinked.)
The week ahead:
If you’re in the San Francisco Yay area, we hope to see you for THE WORKOUT on Thursday night, May 24, *and* at Sleazemore’s Lights Down Low at 222 Minna on Friday night for the debut of LUXXURY LIVE (ELECTRO VERSION)!!!!

…and then save a spot on your dancecard Friday, May 25, for the debut of Baron von Luxxury with Johnatron at Sleazemore’s Lights Down Low at 222! We’ll be debuting our new band, performing electro versions of the Luxxury remixes live! Two men, two synths, one bass guitar, one vocoder and one talkbox…come smell the magic!
Henry “Riton” (pronounced “reeee-ton”, apparently) Smithson is an East London DJ/remixer/musician kid who’s got some a wicked sense of synthy humor. Like this line from the apparently-not-mislabeled “Swuare Eyes” which I very much wish I’d written:
“Square eyes
It’s no surprise
The love of my life
Is not so bright”
Take a trip to FluoKids and grab Riton’s latest work, a re-rub of Datarock’s “Fafafa.” There’s also a cool new remix of Simian Mobile Disco’s “It’s The Beat” on his Myspace.
I’ve been holding off on posting the song by the amazingly named “Does it Offend You, Yeah?” since it’s pretty well publicized in the electro blogosphere, but it’s too good to keep to myself any longer. It features an uber-rock version of Justice’s dirty digital sound, plus a huge driving bass line and squelchy synth squelches galore. And then suddenly: a big pop chorus avec vocoder! I adore dance music but more than anything else I love *songs*, and while there aren’t exactly lyrics to this one, the structure and arrangement is closer to a radio hit than your average club banger. So: big ups!
Discovery credit here goes to Guns n’ Bombs, an LA DJ/production team consisting of Filip Turbotito from Ima Robot and Johnny Love from Opaque, who injected this track into their latest mix. Equal props out to the amazing Acidgirls, who have a link to the full mix.
Guns ‘n Bombs on will be in SF at Club Loaded on March 2, we’ll definitely be there. (Bonus/extra credit: get their first mix at fluokids).
Not so new but major points for lingering in my brain in for the past few months, In Flagranti‘s track “Bang Bang” featuring vocals by G-rizo. I first heard on this on Cut Copy’s FabricLive disc last year, a CD that got major spins in the Luxxury tour van all Summer. Italo-disco madness featuring a Sylvester sample and Giorgio-y 16-th note arpeggiated bass – the perfect ol’ skool electro antidote to the almost violently Zeitgeist flavors of the first song posted.
